The Summer Theater Intensive (STI) is the crown jewel of the NoDa School of Arts. Since 2005, over 30 young people have given up to 6 weeks of their summer to be involved in musical theater. The rigorous and demanding schedule consists of daily rehearsals from 9 a.m. to 4:00 pm from late June through early August.  Performances are scheduled for the first weekend of August on a professional stage.  All students audition for a role and upon casting the show, each day is spent creating the production through solo and ensemble vocal rehearsal, choreography, and acting training. All first time participants must attend an ENTRY AUDITION during the month of May. If selected, participants are invited to attend the Summer Theater Intensive. Summer 2011, as a result of increasing demand and a desire to serve nearly twice as many kids, the STI program expanded to a dual schedule. The Junior STI involves students from 1st to 7th grade who perform a junior length version of a Broadway musical. The Senior STI offers students from 8th to 12th grade the opportunity to perform full-length, more sophisticated musicals.

Applications for the 2012 Summer Theater Intensive will be posted in March 2012. For more application information please email: info@nodaschoolofarts.org

2011 STI performances

The programs wrap up with a professional production involving at least 4 performances, most of which have been historically performed at the prestigious Booth Playhouse (Uptown Charlotte) and are open to the public. While this program is quite demanding, it is also incredibly rewarding. Fun, creative exploration, and the freedom of expression are a part of the rehearsal process. Students will be challenged and stretched to explore, discover, and hone their talents.

"I enjoyed it a lot. Singing and acting were new and hard for me but it was a lesson that I learned [during the summer program] and I really enjoyed doing that. I could feel myself getting excited every time I cam in and I would be happy when I was there. It's helped me in other aspects of my life."
